WILSON
CONCEDES STATE COMPTROLLER RACE
Congratulates
New Comptroller; Thanks 1.8 Million New Yorkers
Across
Political Spectrum for Support
New
York-November 3, 2010...Republican
New York State comptroller candidate Harry J. Wilson, a political
newcomer who garnered unprecedented editorial support and more than
1.8 million votes in his first run for public office, today
conceded victory to incumbent State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli
(D-WFP).
Mr.
Wilson outpolled the top of the Republican ticket by more than
450,000 votes. He won every region of the state, except New York
City.
"I
am enormously proud of the substantive race we ran, but, at the end
of the day, we fell just a little bit short," Mr. Wilson said. "We
take enormous solace in the knowledge that we left not a single
stone unturned in our effort. I am fortunate to have the best
family and friends a man could ask for, and I cannot thank enough
the 1.8 million New Yorkers across the political spectrum who
responded to my call for fiscal accountability in
Albany.
"I
congratulate my opponent, Tom DiNapoli, for his win yesterday. I
hope that the critically important issues we raised during this
campaign are addressed for the benefit of the people of New York
State," Mr. Wilson continued.
Mr.
Wilson, 39, a graduate of Harvard University and the Harvard
Business School, is a nationally recognized expert in corporate
restructuring. His first foray into public service was in 2009,
when he crossed party lines to serve on the President's Auto Task
Force and led the restructuring of General Motors.
Mr.
Wilson said he will remain active in public affairs. His full
remarks from his announcement this morning follow.
###
Well,
things didn't turn out the way we had hoped last
night.
I
passed along my congratulations to my opponent, Comptroller
DiNapoli, with whom I spoke a few minutes ago.
I
want to thank my family - especially my wife, Eva, and our four
wonderful daughters, my parents and my sister and her family - for
their constant support and love.
I
want to thank my terrific campaign team. We gave it a heck of a
run, and we have a lot to be proud of. Thank you for all of your
hard work and commitment.
I
want to thank all of my friends and supporters across the political
spectrum, for your faith in us and in our message. Though we won't
be embarking today on the important mission of fixing our state, I
hope you feel our actions throughout this campaign honored our
cause for fiscal reform and accountability - and honored
you.
Our
campaign was a great effort. We met tens of thousands of New
Yorkers who care deeply about our state and understand the depths
of our problems. It was an honor to spend time with them, to learn
from them and to win the support of 1.8 million New
Yorkers.
I
am incredibly proud of the support that we garnered across the
political spectrum. Just in the last two days alone, I met hundreds
of New Yorkers who told me I was the first Republican for whom they
had ever voted. That vote of confidence and support is deeply
humbling, and I am grateful to every one of them.
I
am hopeful that our new leaders, whom I congratulate across the
board, will address in the months and years ahead the issues we
raised throughout this campaign. As you all know, I am a big
believer in accountability, so I plan to remain involved, to make
sure that they do address the problems of our state.
As
I said many times, in many places throughout this campaign: our
state has enormous potential. All we need to do to unlock it is to
reform our state government. After 284 days on the campaign trail,
I could not believe that more deeply. I look forward to pressing
those same issues in the years ahead. New York can and must once
again become the land of opportunity in which I have been so
fortunate to live the American Dream.
Thank
you.
